Adult Ed Works!  A SMAS Student to SMAS Staff Success Story  Marina at her desk in the SMART Center  Did you know that several SMAS staff members are former SMAS students?  How did they go from student to staff?  Teacher Cynthia sat down with one of these success stories, Marina Kravtsova, to find out.  You might know Marina - she is our English Learner Specialist. Last year she was also our Student Council Advisor.  As part of her work, she helps coordinate the Student Ambassador program and works with Patty and Cynthia to provide students with information about resources.  Monday through Friday, you can find her at her desk in the SMART Center.  When did you start attending SMAS as a student? Passport to Employment students from San Mateo Adult Schools job search class had a wonderful experience at the Career Fair September 28th, 2017. Several students were able to use their English skills to talk to employers about opportunities in a variety of fields including, healthcare, sales,  real-estate, financial, transportation, customer service other industrial service jobs as well as California State Park positions. Several of those who attended were able to secure multiple interviews and are now in the process of deciding what employment or volunteer options they choose. At the Fair Thumbs up on a positive attitude and positive results!      

Passport to Employment - the Job Search class - emphasizes the value of volunteering.  Through volunteering, students share and grow skills and connections.  Here are some examples of the Job Search students in action: Volunteering on Campus Job search class students provide impromptu volunteer service picking up around the San Mateo Adult  School campus. Spending just 30 minutes walking around the rear parking lot and the open space grass areas made for a safer and cleaner school. In a gravel parking lot it's hard to see the small bits of metal and screws that fall out of construction vehicles, but with a magnet -- It's amazing what you find and how many tires you can protect. Small scraps of paper and windy days contributed to what the students found. Some things could still be recycled and were put into the proper receptacles. Adult Ed Works!  A Student to SMAS Staff Success Story Cissie at her desk in the SMART Center Did you know that several SMAS staff members are former SMAS students?  How did they go from student to staff?  Teacher Cynthia sat down with one of these success stories, Cissie West, to find out.  You might know Cissie - she works at the front desk of our school in the afternoon, welcoming everyone who walks in the door, answering questions, answering the phone, and making sure newcomers know where to go. What class did you take at our school? Diane’s class - Office skills in 2002 or 2003.  I was in the class for a year. Students from San Mateo Adult School's ESL and High School Diploma programs, accompanied by SMAS Staff members Patty Villar and Marina Kravtsova, went on a campus tour at College of  San Mateo.  The tour is part of the College Readiness Workshop series that is offered at SMAS to assist adult school students in making a seamless transition from the adult school to community college.  

 Apple, Priyanka, Marina On Saturday, October 7th, SMAS Ambassadors Apple Wei and Priyanka Maran staffed an information table at the San Mateo County Department of Housing   Family, Fun and Resource Expo in Belmont.  Along with SMAS Staff Members Marina Kravtsova and Patty Villar, and ACCEL San Mateo County Regional Consortium Executive Director Ka'Ryn Holder-Jackson, they represented our school and consortium.  Apple and Priyanka told people about our school and programs.  They also learned about resources in the County of San Mateo that can help our students.  There were over seventy organizations at the expo.  The Peninsula Library System table gave away many free books to encourage reading in families.
