Martin Luther King Day, Monday, January 18th (School Closed)

Monday, January 18th, 2016, is Martin Luther King Day, a federal holiday. San Mateo Adult School is closed on MLK Day. It is a Federal Holiday.  Schools and banks and government offices are closed. Why do we remember and honor and celebrate Dr. King? Dr. King pushed for civil rights for everyone.  He wanted everyone to have the same chances.  He wanted everyone to have equal dignity.  Dignity means respect and importance.  He knew everyone was equal.  He also knew that this equality must be recognized.  Sometimes we pretend not to see something.  Dr. King knew it was important to see the value in every person, including ourselves. He challenged people - everyone, including his friends, his enemies, and presidents - to think more deeply about how we see ourselves and the choices we make for ourselves, each other, and our future.  Are we treating others fairly?   Do we see the dignity in every person?  Dr. King sai...

Modern Office Technology

 Modern Office Technology is on page 10 of the brochure  Modern Office Technology is a wonderful class. You can learn Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access, Outlook, and QuickBooks Pro. You do not need keyboarding skills, computer skills, a high school diploma, a GED, or advanced ESL to take the class. If you have Intermediate level ESL skills, you can take the class. This is an Employment Development Department approved course.   If you are on unemployment and your unemployment runs out, you can take this course and get an extension if you meet all the other EDD requirements.   Contact EDD for details.  Teacher Diane with students     This class is free!  Teacher Diane is a winner of the Golden Apple award from the San Mateo Union High School District. She is an excellent teacher!

Do you like caring for others?  Would you like to become a professional home care provider? Check out the Home Care Aide Training Class!   - now free! The Bureau of Labor Statistics says "employment of home health aides is expected to grow by 69 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations. Employment of personal care aides is expected to grow by 70 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations." That means there will be lots of jobs for caregivers. Teacher Diane Cohen says that on the last day of class - graduation day, agencies visit the class, and usually every student is hired.
